About the Scheme
Brief
The National Livestock Mission (NLM) is a centrally sponsored scheme launched by the Government of India in 2014 and significantly revised for the 2021-2026 period. It focuses on the sustainable development of the livestock sector by promoting entrepreneurship and improving animal productivity.
Objective
- To create rural livelihoods through entrepreneurship in poultry, sheep, goat, and piggery
-To enhance per-animal output of meat, eggs, goat milk, and wool through scientific breed improvement
- To strengthen the fodder seed supply chain and encouraging processing units (silage, hay bailing) to reduce the demand-supply gap
- To promote livestock insurance to protect farmers from unexpected losses
Eligibility Criteria
- Experience/Training: Applicants must have relevant training or experience in managing livestock projects
- Land: Ownership or a registered lease for the project site
- Financial Capability: Must have a loan sanction from a bank or, for self-financed projects, provide a bank guarantee for the non-subsidy portion
Benefits
- 50% capital subsidy for project costs, excluding land and personal vehicles
- Subsidy is typically released in two equal installments:
i. Sheep & Goat Breeding: Up to ₹50 lakh subsidy
ii. Poultry Breeding: Up to ₹25 lakh subsidy
iii. Piggery Units: Up to ₹30 lakh subsidy
iv. Fodder Development: Up to ₹50 lakh for fodder blocks or silage units
