About the Scheme
Brief
It is a flagship, centrally-sponsored scheme launched by the Government of India to reduce poverty and vulnerability among the urban poor by enabling them to access sustainable self-employment and skilled wage employment opportunities
Objectives
- To reduce poverty and vulnerability of urban poor households
- Enable access to gainful self-employment and skilled wage employment
- Organize urban poor into Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and federations (ALFs/CLFs)
- Provide credit, skills, and social security to street vendors
- Provide permanent 24x7 all-weather shelters for the urban homeless
Eligibility Criteria
- Urban poor households, including street vendors, ragpickers, and homeless persons
- Minimum age 18 years
- Generally targets families with an annual income below ₹50,000, though this can vary by state
- At least 70% of SHG members must be from urban poor households
Benefits
- Loans for setting up micro-enterprises. Individuals can get loans up to ₹2 Lakh, and SHGs up to ₹10 Lakh
- Interest subsidies on bank interest rates, usually over 6% per annum
- Free training programs (EST&P) for skill development
- Permanent 24/7 shelters equipped with basic amenities
- Access to credit and social security to Street Vendors
